“Be Unique”: an evening with Joel Outschoorn

“Be Unique”, are two words that I constantly heard on the Journey Hotline Interview with Joel Outschoorn who is a talented public speaker, famous compere, and news anchor. But what meaning do these two words have? How can one be unique? In this digital era, we find our role models from TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. From models to food bloggers, from celebrity athletes to pro gamers, all of us have that unique someone we aspire to be. Of course, there is nothing wrong with this, it is important to have passion in life. What should be remembered is that when building something out of this passion one must be in the mentality to set themselves apart from this stream, that is the social trend. Every one of our idols had this mentality. Even Joel mentioned how he got into news reading, anchoring, and public speaking by chance. Keep the mindset that you’re not going to be the next ChanuxBro, the next Kylie Jenner, or iFerg. Instead, start something of your own. Something that you are passionate about. Use the social trend but do not let it use you. Think of your way of being something UNIQUE.

In the immortal words of Snoop Dog, Wiz Khalifa, and Bruno Mars, “We’re Young, Wild and Free”. It is important to capitalize on this youth because it’s limited. Use your youthfulness to build up a Repo. In simple terms and one of the most highlighted comments in Joel’s interview, market yourself.

This is where Public Speaking and the Gavel Club come in. Speech is one of the most powerful tools we humans are gifted with. It has the power to start and end wars. So, imagine what you could do if you harness this awesome power? Of course, it is not easy.

The fear of public speaking or “Glossophobia” is common in everyone even a champion orator like Joel Outschoorn. And that is precisely why we must use all benefits that the Gavel Club provides. Take up meeting roles, do table topics, start your CC, and if you still do not feel like doing that because you are too shy just come to the meetings! I know how much that helped me. Of course, you are going to fail, you might stutter, you might mispronounce a word but at the end of the day, you can tell yourself that you did it. You took that first step. And that is something to be proud of. Even a premier speaker like Joel has made mistakes. The important thing was that he did not give up because of one simple mistake. And that has helped him market himself as one of a kind. People are going to criticize but that is a tiny smudge on the big picture.

In the inspiring and true-to-heart words of Joel Outschoorn himself, “Take up the world, take up each challenge with a positive mind and live your life to the fullest”.
