Last week we had an education meeting at Gavel Club. The title was “The Bucket list”. There, we all had to talk about our bucket lists and what we want to achieve in our lives.
What I observed there was that every single person has a bucket list, and they all have a plan to achieve it. But have you thought about what have you done to get there? What actions have taken to achieve your bucket list?

Some people probably started doing something but, they didn’t continue consistently, so in the end, they feel like they haven’t achieved anything. Others started working on something but got distracted by another item in their bucket list.
I know I’ve been there too. It’s like we are in the same loop every year. But last year was different. Of course, I couldn’t do everything I planned. I mean, you can never do everything, right?
Every new year brings something new, even if you completed your entire bucket list. That’s human nature. So, here’s what I did to get out of that loop. This new year is a new start to write a new chapter of our lives.

First, pick a few goals from your list, not all of them. Then divide them in to small milestones that you can achieve in a short period of time, like in 3 or 4 months. You have to remember that “Starting small is still a start”.
While much of the world experiences time through changing seasons, Sri Lankans experience time through the rhythm of everyday life. Our progress is not seasonal; it is daily. Therefore, if you want to achieve something, you have to work on it daily to feel like you’re moving forward. It doesn’t have to take hours, just a little amount of time, at least 30 minutes a day.

That activity should be aligned with the goals you have chosen.
The next thing is consistency. That’s all. By the end of this year, you will see the difference.
Let me give you two small tips I follow when it comes to chasing goals.
Don’t be afraid to do things that you have never done before. One of my favorite actors, Denzel Washington, once said “If you want to have something you never had, you have to do something you’ve never done”.

First say yes, then figure out what to do. As university students, we have a lot of opportunities to grow. But the real question is whether we take those chances or not. Always say yes to new opportunities.
Even if you don’t know what you’re doing, figure it out somehow. That’s how you learn something new. Take small steps. For example, if someone asks you, “Can you write a blog post for this week?” even if you have no idea what to write about, say yes, then figure it out.
Think about these ideas and try to apply them to your life in your own way. This new year, give yourself a new start.
Good luck to all.
